Guide for agencies

G2 Grid for agencies: ranking and badge cost

The short answer

You cannot pay to move up a G2 Grid: placement is algorithmic, while payment licenses an earned badge for external marketing. For a service provider, the current G2 Score uses Satisfaction and Market Presence/Proficiency; G2 no longer publishes the old 50/50 weighting. A free profile can rank and earn recognition, but using report-based, milestone and annual badges in marketing requires a paid Brand package. As of July 2026, G2 publicly lists Starter at $299 per month or $2,999 for the first year for businesses with 1–100 employees; renewal is $599 per month or $6,000 per year, while Professional and Enterprise are quote-based.

The numbers that govern the Grid

Rank is earned; the licence is the paid layer.

Reviews and market evidence determine whether and where a provider appears; a subscription determines which earned visual assets the provider may reuse.

How the ranking works

G2 does not sell Grid position.

G2's current documentation says Grid placement is calculated algorithmically and cannot be changed manually, including by G2 employees. That is the key distinction from a sponsored directory: paying G2 can buy profile, campaign, analytics and content-licensing features, but it cannot buy the coordinates of a service provider on the Grid. G2's own pricing FAQ is equally direct that it is not a pay-to-play ranking system.

For agencies, the score has two components — not a published 50/50 split

The service-provider model differs from the software model. Satisfaction draws heavily on service-specific review responses: Professionalism, Expertise of Team, Responsiveness, Execution Ability and Communication Skills. Review volume is also high-importance; recency has medium importance and completeness has low importance. Market Presence/Proficiency assesses reach and experience through factors such as verified category expertise for ecosystem providers, company age, reviewer-country diversity, operating countries and supported languages. Scores are normalised from 0 to 100 within each category, so a provider's position depends on its own inputs and their distribution among category competitors.

Older summaries — including an earlier version of our broader marketplace guide — described G2 Score as a fixed 50% Satisfaction and 50% Market Presence split. G2's methodology updated on 18 February 2026 names the two components but does not assign that fixed weighting. The defensible current formulation is therefore “Satisfaction plus Market Presence/Proficiency,” not “half and half.” This guide and the related marketplace comparison use the current wording.

Review velocity helps only when the reviews qualify

More and better recent reviews can move the Satisfaction component, but raw review count is not a shortcut. G2 applies review decay from submission onward, recalculates it daily, gives reviews stronger weight through roughly the first 18 months, and accelerates the decay after that. At about three years a review retains roughly 3% of its original weight. Updating an existing review resets its decay. That makes a steady, representative review programme more useful than a one-off spike.

Two visible review types do not feed the ranking at all. Reviews from business partners such as resellers and reviews from guest users may remain on G2 with labels, but G2 excludes them from star ratings, G2 Score, Satisfaction, Market Presence and other ranking algorithms because their relationship or usage context can bias the evidence. An agency should never report these as Grid-moving reviews.

Earned result versus paid rights

What is free, what is earned, and what requires payment.

A G2 badge is not the ranking itself. Keep profile access, eligibility, recognition and republication rights separate.

Decision method

How an agency should decide whether the G2 badge is worth it.

Treat the badge licence as a marketing investment attached to an earned result. Do not treat it as a ranking fee.

1. Verify that you qualify as a service provider

Check the exact G2 category and its inclusion criteria. A Grid report requires the category to clear G2's aggregate thresholds and your profile to have at least 10 reviews in that category. Paying before eligibility does not create a Grid position.

2. Audit the reviews that actually count

Separate verified client evidence from business-partner and guest-user reviews, which G2 excludes from scoring. Map review recency, completeness and the service attributes clients answer. Use a representative review request, never positive-review gating.

3. Read the two score components independently

Use my.G2 scoring data where available to inspect Satisfaction and Market Presence/Proficiency. A weak component needs evidence, not a subscription: better current client reviews for Satisfaction, or accurate reach and capability data for Presence/Proficiency.

4. Price the package, not an imaginary standalone badge

The public Starter price includes badge licensing and several other features. Allocate the cost across the features you will genuinely use; do not call the full subscription “the badge price.” If Professional or Enterprise is proposed, obtain a written quote because G2 does not publish those prices.

5. Define the conversion event before subscribing

Choose the outcome the badge must influence — qualified form submissions, demo requests or assisted opportunities — and tag links consistently. Compare the result with our paid-listing ROI guide. A visual trust signal without an attributable business event is not yet evidence of return.

6. Keep the claim precise wherever the badge appears

Link the badge back to the applicable G2 profile and follow G2's attribution rules. Name the category, segment, region and reporting season. Never turn “High Performer in one category” into an unsupported claim that the agency is universally top-ranked.

Four practical conclusions

The Grid rewards evidence, not subscription spend.

These are the decisions an agency can act on without confusing an earned ranking with a licensed marketing asset.

Claim free first

A free profile can collect reviews, qualify for reports and rank. Complete the evidence layer before buying distribution rights.

Build recent evidence

Review decay makes a steady flow of genuine client reviews more useful than a short-lived campaign spike.

Exclude biased inputs

Business-partner and guest-user reviews are visible but do not affect the G2 Score or Grid placement.

Measure the licence

A paid package can amplify an earned badge. Its value must be measured as marketing, not assumed from the rank.

Definition

G2 badge licence, defined.

G2 badge licence

Permission to reuse an earned G2 badge in sales and marketing. It does not buy, improve or manually alter the provider's Grid position.

A G2 report badge is generated only after a product or service earns qualifying recognition. Free profiles can rank and can use the Users Love Us badge when eligible; report-based, milestone and annual badges require a paid Brand package for external marketing use. The licence commercialises republication of the result, not the result itself.

Disclosure

How this portal differs from a paid marketplace.

This portal is an independent reference site, not an agency, and does not sell optimisation services. Its agency directory uses public criteria and does not sell placement. The operator also runs Blobic, which appears under those same criteria with a disclosure badge; Blobic pays nothing for its place and receives no ranking preference. G2's earned-rank/paid-licence boundary is credible precisely because the ranking is not for sale. Our own directory must meet the same standard.

FAQ

Common questions about G2 Grid ranking and badge cost.

Can an agency pay to rank higher on G2?

No. G2 says Grid placement is algorithmic and cannot be manually altered, including by its employees. Paid Brand packages add profile, campaign, analytics and badge-licensing features, but they do not move the provider's Grid coordinates.

Is the G2 Score still 50% Satisfaction and 50% Market Presence?

G2's current methodology, updated in February 2026, names Satisfaction and Market Presence/Proficiency as the two service-provider components but does not publish a fixed 50/50 weighting. Use the two-component description unless G2 publishes a new explicit split.

How much does a G2 badge cost?

There is no standalone public price for a report badge. In July 2026, badge licensing is included in Starter at $299 per month or $2,999 for the first year for businesses with 1–100 employees; renewal is $599 per month or $6,000 per year. Professional and Enterprise require a quote. The free tier can use the Users Love Us badge when earned.

Do business-partner reviews improve a G2 Grid ranking?

No. G2 labels business-partner reviews but excludes them from the star rating, G2 Score, Satisfaction, Market Presence and other ranking algorithms. Guest-user reviews are excluded from those calculations as well.

How many reviews does an agency need for a G2 Grid?

A product or service needs at least 10 reviews in the corresponding category to qualify for a Grid report. The category itself must have at least six products with 10 or more reviews and at least 150 reviews overall.

Is a paid G2 badge worth it for an AEO agency?

Only if the agency has already earned relevant recognition and can attribute the licence to qualified outcomes. Compare the package cost with assisted opportunities or conversions, account for the other bundled features, and avoid treating the badge as a ranking purchase. Results are measurable but never guaranteed.

Next step

Build the free evidence layer before paying to amplify it.

Complete accurate profiles, collect representative client evidence and claim every criteria-based listing first. Then price any badge licence against an attributable result. Agencies can also apply to this portal's free directory; buyers can inspect its public criteria.
