Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google Search's AI-generated summaries shown above classic results, composed from multiple retrieved sources with links. Together with AI Mode, they are Google's main answer-engine surface and a key target for AEO work.

AI Overviews appear for queries where Google decides a synthesized answer helps, and they cite a rotating set of supporting pages. Google has explained that these features can use query fan-out, issuing several related sub-searches before composing the answer, which means a site can be cited for queries it never ranked for classically.

What influences inclusion

  • Standard indexing: pages must be crawlable and indexable; there is no separate AI Overviews opt-in.
  • Snippet controls: max-snippet and nosnippet directives constrain what the overview can quote.
  • Extractable structure: clear headings, direct answers and consistent facts make passages quotable.
  • Classic search equity still matters: sources often, though not always, overlap with well-ranking pages.

For measurement, AI Overviews should be sampled like any other engine surface: with a prompt portfolio, per market and language, tracking when an overview appears, whether the brand is cited and which competitors share the panel.
